Economics Public Lecture- “Why We Are Poor”
“Why We Are Poor” is the topic for discussion at the public Lecture hosted by the Department of Economics, UWI, Mona. Dr. Damien King, Senior Lecturer and Head of the department will deliver the Lecture. The event is slated for Thursday, November 22, 2012 at 5 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.
The presentation seeks to explain why Jamaica has consistently failed to implement growth-promoting policies. It finds the roots of that outcome in the electoral politics of an unequal society, which itself is an outcome of Jamaica’s historical experience. This discussion is particularly relevant as the government seeks to conclude an agreement with the IMF, an agreement which centres on the government’s poor record in implementing previous agreements with the Fund. The presentation therefore addresses why the country’s agreements with the IMF have not been successful.
The university community and the public are invited to attend.
