For fifty two years, the University Singers has distinguished itself as one of the leading choral groups in the Caribbean, widely noted for its versatility, spanning a varied number of musical genres including Classical, American Negro Spirituals, Jazz, Caribbean Folk, Gospel and Local and International Popular music. A special feature of the choir’s repertoire is the original music of Caribbean composers.
On Easter Sunday, March 31, The University Singers presents “This Joyful Eastertide”, a Programme of vocal sacred music at the University Chapel, Mona, commencing at 5 pm. The choir will sing anthems of well-known classical composers as well as “He was crucified”, an Easter anthem composed by the choir’s conductor, Franklin Halliburton.
Archie Dunkley, the organist, will not only provide instrumental accompaniment, but will present organ solos in the second half of the programme, which will feature guest soloist, Nomali Lumsden, soprano.
Apart from her performance with the University singers in 2011, Nomali's angelic soprano voice is virtually unknown to secular audiences. This Easter for the first time, Nomali will be sharing with the wider Jamaican public. Her performance will include a mixture of spirituals, Jamaican folk and the vocal work of Purcell, Haydn and Tippet, in a sacred presentation that promises to be moving and beautiful.
