"Small Islands, Big History"

Professor Higman is Visiting Professor in the Department of History and Archaeolofy for Semester 2 of the 2013/2014 academic year.
Professor Higman is duly recognized both locally and internationally receiving prestigious awards and honours such as the Bancroft Prizes for books (1976), the Musgrave Medal (1992), Elsa Goveia Book Prize of the Association of Caribbean Historians (1986 and 1999), Gordon K. Lewis Award of the Caribbean Studies Association (2000) and induction as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (1997) and the Royal Historical Society (1988), among numerous other awards.
In 2012, he was honoured by the Department of History and Archaeology at the History at Fifty Conference held in commemoration of Jamaica’s 50th year of Independence. In 2013, the University of the West Indies conferred on him, the Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD).
