Seminar presentation is entitled DISEASE MODELLING USING COMPARTMENTAL APPROACH

ABSTRACT:  The purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding of the dynamics of disease transfer using the basic SIS and SIR compartmental models. These models can be used to understand the transmission of infections and to evaluate the potential impact of control programmes in reducing morbidity and mortality. The area being studied is particularly challenging as the equations used in the models are difficult to solve analytically and require the use of sophisticated algorithms and computing power. In addition, the inherent stochastic nature of disease dynamics adds even more complexity. Using these simple models a wealth of information can be garnered as it relates to understanding the infection process, one such phenomenon is the herd immunity which will be explored. Furthermore, important estimates such as time to extinction and probability of outbreak of a disease, as well as maximum numbers infected. Models present a way to make an informed estimate and should be utilized in the decision making process for public health officials.
