IGDS- International Men's Day 2014 Celebrations

Event Date:
Nov 19 2014 - 1:00pm - 4:00pm

The Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS), Mona Unit, the UWI Gender Society and Chancellor Hall, will be celebrating International Men’s Day (IMD) on Tuesday, November 19, 2014, 1 – 4 pm, under the theme: ‘Males at Risk in the Education System’.

At 1 pm there will be a silent march around the Ring Road with male students and men from within and outside the university, with placards bearing messages linked to the theme.  The march is scheduled to start and end in the vicinity of the Undercroft.  This will be followed by an interactive public education session, from 2-4 pm at the Undercroft, where speakers will present their views on causes, possible solutions as well as their personal experiences in encouraging males to participate and achieve their potential through higher education.

As we seek to celebrate with our men and boys on IMD, we aim to build awareness of factors that contribute to the under-participation of males in higher education and to increase action to redress this imbalance which is reflected in a 70:30 ratio in favour of females at UWI. The hope is to guide policies and actions to improve male participation in secondary and tertiary education.

All are welcome to attend and participate.
