Event Date:
May 28 2016 - 8:00pm

The new production by Jamaica’s award-winning University Players explores the fascinating life story of Catherine Mulgrave, and is based on the research of eminent UWI scholar, Professor Maureen Warner-Lewis as well as other historical sources.

Catherine began her life in Luanda, now in modern-day Angola. She was abducted into slavery, and after the ship in which she was held captive wrecked off the southern shores of Jamaica in 1833 en route to Havana, she was brought ashore and subsequently adopted by then Governor of Jamaica, Constantine Henry Phipps, the Earl of Mulgrave and his wife Maria, the Countess of Mulgrave.

Catherine’s education and training as a teacher in Jamaica, eventually led her to become a Missionary in West Africa. These events and her further adventures on the Gold Coast of West Africa, are the fascinating subject of what promises to be a most exciting evening of original theatre.

The play boasts an all-star cast including Nadean Rawlins, Jean-Paul Menou, Makeda Solomon, Paul Issa, Hilary Nicholson, Melward Morris, Cadine Hall, Michael-Sean Harris, Mikhail Samuels and Carl Davis, all of whom have committed themselves to this project with great dedication and enthusiasm.

The opening performance will take place at 8pm on Saturday May 14, 2016 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, University of the West Indies, Mona. Thereafter, Performances will be on Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 6pm until May 29, 2016. Call 977-9770 for further details.
