Reclaiming our Power: African Women and Feminism

World renowned African feminist activist Minna Salami is coming to the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus! Spearheaded by the Institute of Caribbean Studies in collaboration with the Institute for Gender and Development Studies - Mona Unit, Minna Salami (otherwise known as MsAfropolitan, will speak on Friday, June 10, 2016 at 6:00 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre in the Faculty of Humanities and Education.

Entitled “Reclaiming our Power: African Women and Feminism”, the talk will highlight the essence of Minna’s work, which is seen as a fresh perspective on Africa, women's power and feminist ideology. Her work spans fields such as philosophy, popular culture, sexuality, and religion in a refreshingly entertaining dialogue where personal anecdotes and historical references make for informative and inspirational reflection. Topics such as sexuality, relationships and revolution are engaged in Minna Salami's work in a productive way.

Salami comes to the UWI as one who writes and speaks on various international platforms including the popular TEDx Talks, and is founder of the multiple award winning blog MsAfropolitan. Her writing appears on popular platforms including the Guardian, Al Jazeera and Huffington Post. Minna is listed as one of “40 African Change-makers under 40” by Applause Africa, one of “50 Remarkable Women Connected” by Nokia, one of “Nigeria’s 100 most influential women” by YNaija, and one of the “Top 100 Most Influential Black People on Digital/Social Media” by Eelan Media. She is the Africa Diaspora Awards 2013 winner of the “Outstanding Achievement in Media”, the Women 4 Africa 2013 “Blogger of the Year”, and was shortlisted “Blogger of the Year” by RED Magazine ‘Red’s Hot Women Awards’ in 2012.
