Primary School Child Rights Competition

Students from fifty primary schools throughout the island are expected to converge at The University on the West Indies, Mona Campus on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 to participate in a Primary School Creative Child Rights Competition.  

The Hon. Alando Terrelonge, MP, State Minister in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information and Professor Dale Webber, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the UWI, Mona Campus, are scheduled to address the students and their teachers.

The event is being hosted by the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), UWI, Mona in partnership with the Office of the Children’s Advocate (OCA), Child Protection and Family Service Agency (CPFSA), NCB Foundation, the Nigerian High Commission, Lasco, Grace Foods, Grace Kennedy Foundation, Regions Financial Services and the United Nations in Jamaica. The event is being held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by member states of the United Nations.   

Students from each school will perform original creative pieces in the form of skits, poems, and songs to demonstrate what they think about children's rights in Jamaica. The event is scheduled to begin at 8:30 am.

Professor Aldrie Henry-Lee, University Director, SALISES, the event organizer states that this activity adheres to the Child Participation Rights stated in the Convention of the Rights of the Child which Jamaica ratified in 1991.
