ROYALTY, RACISM, REPUBLICANISM & REPARATION

On March 25, the Office of the Vice-Chancellor in collaboration with the Centre for Reparation Research at The UWI, will host a Vice-Chancellor's Forum themed, Royalty, Racism, Republicanism & Reparation: Preparing for the 60th Anniversary of Nationhood in the CARICOM Region.

March 25 marks the annual observance of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The UWI event will honour the hundreds of thousands who suffered and died at the hands of the brutal slavery system and contextualise the observance in the current context of the global movement for reparatory justice.

Two panel discussions will take a closer look at:

       Britain’s role in this crime against humanity and the fact that there has been little progress and conversation between the British Government and the Caribbean on the matter of reparations;

       recent international reports surrounding racism in the UK and the Royal Family and the impact of the political future of a Caribbean in which the Governor-General, appointed by the Queen, is still Head of State in many islands.

As we approach the 60th year of independence for two of the largest countries in the region, the discussion will also seek to address: What future do we wish to have? Will we turn to Republicanism as some have done and others have contemplated? What is the current perspective on the ideological orientation of the British monarchy? Will we make this century truly the reparation century?
