Expanding the boundaries of the 'caring profession'

Miss Ruth Edwards

School of Nursing

The UWI School of Nursing, Mona (UWISON), as the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Development in the Caribbean, is committed to modeling trends that meet regional and global standards in nursing and midwifery education. UWISON has a ward size state-of- the-art nursing skills laboratory with electronic simulators that depict true-to-life learning experiences for nursing students to develop their skills proficiency before transferring these skills to patients in clinical settings. One of the high technology electronic simulators at UWISON is SimMan, which simulates all human functions including breathing, talking, coughing, bleeding, arrhythmias and cardio pulmonary arrest.

The photo shows Miss Ruth Edwards, a final year nursing student, Dean’s List awardee and member of the Faculty of Medical Sciences Honour Society using SimMan as the “patient” with complex multiple health conditions to develop her skills prior to caring for patients with similar conditions in hospitals. She is administering intravenous medications and blood while simultaneously assessing pulmonary and cardiovascular functions, administering oxygen and monitoring the patient’s cardiac readings.
