CARITOX (Caribbean Toxicology) is an independent toxicology unit in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences. CARITOX offers comprehensive testing in the areas of clinical, forensic, sports, food and environmental toxicology.  Current research focuses on Cannabis spp., and on toxins and nutrients present in commonly eaten Jamaican foods.

CARITOX utilizes state-of-the-art instrumentation including Ultra high performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS/MS) and Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) for the analysis of each individual drug.

The Unit is headed by Professor Wayne Mclaughlin, along with a staff of trained chemists and a toxicologist with years of research and industry knowledge and expertise.
