Nurturing Future Generations

The UWI, Mona Campus makes every effort to engage students at all levels of the educational system. Departments operate many vibrant outreach programmes, one area of focus being The UWI Geology Museum which is the only earth science museum of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean. The museum houses rocks, minerals, fossils and other information that explain Jamaica’s geology and its relevance to the past and future economic, scientific and cultural development. Some 2000 persons visit annually for tours, lessons, seminars and workshops. Funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) facilitated the installation of the Interactive Learning Centre which opened at the Museum in March 2010.
In another outreach initiative led by lecturer in the Department of Mathematics, Dr. Raymond McEachin, students from schools across Jamaica are encouraged to participate in the Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad which aims to identify mathematically talented students, encourage them in their studies and provide extra resources and special training for them. The top three performers participate in the Central American and Caribbean Regional Mathematical Olympiad.
