Protecting plants through Tropical Horticulture

Interested in pursuing a career in ornamental horticulture, floriculture, fruit crop production, landscaping, or nursery management? Horticulture is one of the sectors that can be used to address food insecurity and greening of the environment. The UWI, Mona Campus introduced the Bachelor of Science degree programme in Tropical Horticulture in 2009/2010, building on the strong record of training and research in Tropical Agriculture for which The UWI is world renowned. The programme covers the production of fruits, vegetables, root crops, ornamentals, agriculture protection as well as agricultural service activities including landscape design, maintenance and extension. It builds on the existing suite of courses in the plant sciences, complemented by soil and water management, agribusiness, venture creation and an internship programme. The Tropical Horticulture programme also prepares persons for careers in areas including greenhouse and other types of protected agriculture, forestry, agroforestry, agronomy, crop production, crop physiology and plant protection. Qualified graduates will be able to pursue graduate studies in plant protection and production, agricultural entrepreneurship, or any other related field to agriculture or horticulture.
