Research for Development, Research for Life

Dr. Camille Bowen-Forbes

An important mission of the UWI is to conduct high quality research that is aimed at meeting critical regional needs. Researchers like Dr. Camille Bowen-Forbes, from the Department of Chemistry, are committed to that mission. Dr. Bowen-Forbes has been undertaking research on the health-beneficial properties and biologically active constituents of uncommon edible Jamaican fruits that grow wild. She has a keen interest in research that would lead to the productive utilization of our natural resources. One such study conducted on the Jamaican red raspberry revealed that this little-known fruit possesses high antioxidant activity, and some of its constituents possess anti-inflammatory and anticancer activity. Studies like this have the potential to lead to the discovery of new plant sources that may be used in the treatment of disease, as well as the development of value-added food products with health benefits to consumers in Jamaica, the region, and beyond, and contribute significantly to our food and agricultural industries.
