Annual Nursing Midwifery Conference and Mary Seivwright Day May 13 & 14

Over Six Hundred (600) participants have already registered for the Annual Nursing Midwifery Conference and Mary Seivwright Day being organized by the Department of Advanced Nursing Education (DANE), University of the West Indies (UWI), for May 13 & 14, 2004 on the Mona Campus. The theme of the conference is “Nurses Challenging Health Issues Through Research”.

Conference Coordinator, Mrs. Gloria LaTouche explains that the conference objectives include “presenting nursing and health related research findings and stimulating research among nurses and other health professionals,” so that nurses can increase their knowledge and influence their practice in health care. The organizers also hope to identify those research findings that can be used to develop nursing protocols that can be adapted in clinical practice.

Conference presentations will focus on a variety of topics including maternal and child health, chronic healthcare and quality care issues. These sessions will be held simultaneously at the Social Sciences, Inter- Faculty and Chemistry (C5) Lecture Theatres on the Mona Campus using state-of-the art communications technology..

The highlight of the conference will be the launch of the Mary Seivwright Distinguished Nursing Research Lecture on May 14. Head of DANE, Dr Hermi Hewitt, explains that the lecture is in honour of Dr. the Hon. Mary Jane Seivwright, the first West Indian Director of the Advanced Nursing Education Unit until she demitted office in 1989.

Dr. Seivwright was also instrumental in developing a culture of research in the field of nursing in the Caribbean.

The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Carol Baxter, a Jamaican who is Professor of Nursing at the School of Health and Social Sciences and Head of the Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Research and Development, Middlesex University, London, England. Professor Baxter will also deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony on Day 1 of the conference.

Dr. Baxter has been appointed a Visiting Professor to the UWI and will also deliver a public lecture on May 20, 2004 at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre from 4:00 – 6:00 pm in addition to other academic activities.
