Medical Students Receive Canadian Scholarships

Four students from the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies have been awarded scholarships which will assist them in meeting expenses associated with their academic programme. The students, all members of the Class of 2006, are Mr. Vantario Taylor, Miss Dana Richardson, Mr. Derwin Christmas and Miss Inga Smith. The presentations were made on Thursday, July 31, 2003, at a brief ceremony held at the Faculty

The scholarships were instituted through the assistance of a Jamaican living in Canada, Mr. Lloyd G. Seivwright. He is President of the Supreme Council of Independent United Order of Solomon Inc. Canada, a non-profit, charitable and fraternal organisation. Mr. Seivwright is also a 2003 recipient of the Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation for Service to Jamaica.

Mr. Taylor, a Bahamian, is the recipient of the Independent United Order of Solomon Inc. scholarship, which is valued at One Thousand Five Hundred Canadian dollars and awarded on the basis of outstanding performance in the Stage 1 examinations. He graduated from The Government High School in 1998 and holds an Associate of Arts degree from the College of the Bahamas.

An Antiguan national, Miss Richardson is the recipient of the Danford Food Market and “G” Quality Traders award, valued at Two Thousand Five Hundred Canadian dollars. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement, financial need and outstanding performance in the Stage 1 Examinations. Miss Richardson attended the Christ the King High School in Antigua and holds the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the UWI Cave Hill Campus.

The Chevonne-Harry Lue Scholarship, awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement and financial need, was received by Mr. Christmas, who is from St. Kitts-Nevis. He is a graduate of the Basseterre High School and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College.
Miss Inga Smith, a Bahamian, is the recipient of the Harvey and Linda Gellman Scholarship which was the first to be introduced in 1989. The scholarship is valued at Two Thousand Five Hundred Canadian dollars and includes a trip to Canada. Awardees must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and financial need. Since 1990, the award has been rotated between Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean. Miss Smith holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Beloit College.
