International Focus on Accrediting Jamaican Social Workers

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work will be one of three sponsors of a one-day seminar entitled, “Social Work Accreditation: Improving and Strengthening the Profession”, on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 on the UWI Mona campus. The other sponsors are the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) and the Jamaica Association of Social Workers (JASW). Mr. Victor Cummings, Member of Parliament, will speak at the opening exercise scheduled for 9 a.m. in the Executive Lecture Theatre, Mona School of Business.
Members of the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) have been invited to make presentations on the experiences of countries as varied as Canada, Germany and South Africa. There will also be presentations about Caribbean efforts to set standards for social workers and related professionals.
The Social Work Unit of the Department and the Jamaica Association of Social Workers (JASW) have been working together on a project to create a system of accreditation for professional social workers in Jamaica.
The seminar on social work accreditation is one of the events taking place in connection with the meeting of the Board of the IASSW. The IASSW is the premier organization for professional social work education in the world. It has some 2000 members from over 100 countries around the world. The Board meeting is being hosted by Social Welfare Training Centre, whose Tutor Coordinator, Lincoln Williams, is an out-going member of Board.
