FOURTH BIENNIAL LUCILLE MATHURIN MAIR PUBLIC LECTURE

“Men, Masculinities and Development” is the title of the fourth biennial Lucille Mathurin Mair Public Lecture commemorating the International Day of Women, to be delivered on Thursday, march 11, 2004 at 5.00 p.m. in the Old Library at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.
The lecture will be delivered by Professor Michael Kimmel of State University of New York. Professor Kimmel, a sociologist, educator and author, has received international recognition for his contribution to gender studies as he examines men’s lives from a pro-feminist perspective. His books on masculinity include “Changing Men: New Directions in Research on Men and Masculinity”, “Against the Tide: Pro-Feminist Men in the United States, 1776-1990” and “Men Confront Pornography”
The public lecture was named after Dr. Lucille Mathurin Mair in recognition of her pioneering historical research work in the field of gender. Besides being a historian, Dr. Mair was an eminent diplomat who represented Jamaica at the United Nations in the capacity of Deputy Permanent Representative and subsequently Permanent Representative. She also served Jamaica as Director of Public Information, as Ambassador to the Republic of Cuba and as member of the Senate and Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
