UWI APPOINTS ESTATE MANAGER

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Timothy Miller as Estate Manager, Maintenance Services at the Mona Campus, from August 1, 2003 to July 31, 2006 in the first instance.

As Estate Manager, Mr. Miller is primarily responsible for the management of the University’s estate at Mona, and all its other properties in Jamaica. Such management responsibility extends to the planning and construction of new buildings, alteration, extension and renovation of existing buildings, the maintenance of buildings, grounds and physical facilities, the preparation of facilities for ceremonial and other official University events on the campus and the provision of housing for staff.

Mr. Miller is a professional engineer and international consultant, with extensive professional, academic and administrative experience. He holds the Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, and the Master of Science degree in Radio Engineering/Telecommunications from Odessa Polytechnic Institute in the Ukraine, USSR. He has pursued studies in Fiber Optics and Advanced Digital Signal Processing at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, U.S.A. and also holds the Diploma in International TV Management from the National Academy of Sciences in Caracas, Venezuela.

Prior to joining the staff of the UWI, he worked as an International Consultant Engineer in the Cayman Islands, engaged in professional engineering, project management, development, maintenance and training. He also served for over ten years as President and Consultant Engineer with TIMMELL Research and Development Company in Toronto, Canada, conducting engineering projects with Canadian, American and Caribbean companies governments and institutions. In this capacity, Mr. Miller was also involved in the research, design, development, management and maintenance of electrical, telecommunications, and information technology.

His academic experience includes serving as Visiting Professor in the Engineering and Computing faculty at the University of Technology, Jamaica, involved in the development and presentation of lectures and the conduct of training courses in computer network engineering for Cable & Wireless engineers. He was also Lecturer/Research Engineer at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, USA.

Mr. Miller has held a number of other positions. He was Director of the Electrical and Electronics (Informatics) sector at the Jamaica Industrial Development Corporation (JIDC)/JAMPRO, providing technical assistance, training and consultancy services to manufacturers of products and services. As Chief Engineer and Project Manager at the then Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation, he was involved in the design and construction of transmitter sites, studio management and the training of technical staff. He has also worked as a member of the scientific and engineering staff in Computer-aided design and development of Fiber optical communications and digital switching systems with Bell-Northern Research in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. He began his engineering career in 1977 with the Ministry of Communications and Works in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Timothy Miller is a Commissioned Officer in the Jamaica Defence Force and is a member of the International Association of Electrical Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He is married with three sons Timothy 2nd, Aaron and Isaac.
