Vice Chancellor's Statement re Appointment of PVC Undergraduate Studies

I am pleased to announce that Professor Marlene Hamilton will be appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Board for Undergraduate Studies to replace Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie.

Professor Marlene Hamilton has had a distinguished career at The University of the West Indies and was the first Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Board for Undergraduate Studies. She is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, graduating with a BSc from the Faculty of Natural Sciences in 1961 then completing higher Diplomas in Education, specialising in Science Education and Educational Psychology. In 1973, she completed an MA degree and in 1976, a PhD from The University of the West Indies.

She joined the UWI staff in 1971 as a Teaching Assistant in the School of Education, was appointed Lecturer in the Faculty of Education in 1973 and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1980. She was appointed Professor in the Faculty of Education in October 1999. Professor Hamilton has served as Dean of the Faculty of Education; Pro-Vice Chancellor, Student and Alumni Relations; Pro-Vice Chancellor, Undergraduate Studies; Deputy Principal of the Mona Campus from 1991 – 1996, and most recently as Pro-Vice Chancellor, Administration and Special Initiatives since 1998.

Her academic interests include gender roles in education and issues affecting levels of achievement in specific disciplines at different levels of the education continuum. She has authored several articles on these subject areas and has also successfully supervised more than thirty postgraduate students at the Masters and PhD levels.

In 2002, the Government of Jamaica conferred upon her the Award of the Order of Distinction, Commander Class.
