In celebration of UWI Vice Chancellor’s Cricket Week, former West Indian wicket keeper Ridley Jacobs will lead the Vice Chancellor’s XI against South Africa on April 16th and 17th 2005 at the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Cricket Grounds, UWI, St. Augustine. The week’s activities will also include a lecture on The Future of West Indies Cricket and A Tribute to Sir Frank Worrell, as well as the launch of a book that takes a retrospective look at West Indies cricket.

The Vice Chancellor’s Cricket Week has become a tradition in regional cricket over the last ten years. The week-long event features a wide range of cricket activities involving local, regional and international cricketers and will be officially launched on Monday 11th April at 10:00 a.m. Following the launch of the Cricket Week, the Trinidad & Tobago’s President’s XI will play against a combined UWI Team. Women’s Cricket will be held on the Tuesday 12th April at 1:00 p.m., followed by a friendly match between past and present members of the UWI Cricket Team at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, 14th April.

The University of the West Indies will also highlight the three W’s of West Indies Cricket. On Friday 15th April at 6:30 p.m. in the Learning Resource Centre Auditorium at the St. Augustine campus, Sir Everton Weekes will address the significant contributions made by the late all-round cricketer and captain of the West Indies team, Sir Frank Worrell. Sir Clyde Walcott will share his views on the future of West Indies cricket followed by a question and answer session moderated by Bryan Davis. Campus Principal Dr. Bhoendradatt Tewarie will then give a brief presentation to launch the book 75 Years of West Indies Cricket: 1928-2003 by Ray Goble and Keith A.P. Sandiford, with a foreword by Clive Lloyd.

An official opening of the Vice Chancellor’s newly refurbished Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Cricket Grounds will take place on Saturday 16th April. The Sir Frank Worrell Grounds, home to first class cricket matches since 1974, has now been upgraded according to ICC standards. It will boast a 75 yard cricket field with 4 pitches, an exterior cricket practice area with nets, a scoreboard and sight screens.

The two-day match between the Vice Chancellor’s XI and the South African cricket team will bring the week of celebrations to a close. The match will honour the contributions made by cricketing giant Ridley Jacobs to West Indian cricket. The Antigua born left-handed batsman and wicket keeper made his test debut against South Africa at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, in 1998. He was also the first West Indian to score a test century against South Africa.

Jacobs will captain the Vice Chancellor’s XI, playing alongside international cricketers such as Habibul Bashar, Captain of the Bangladesh cricket team, and Shikhan Dhawan of India. The team will also include Tino Best of Barbados, Ryan Ramdass of Guyana, Richard Kelly and Dave Mohammed of Trinidad & Tobago, as well as UWI cricketers Tishan Maraj and Philip Brown.
