INCREASES IN TUITION FEES AT UWI HELD BELOW NINE PERCENT

The Council of the University of the West Indies during its annual business meeting held at the Mona Campus April 20-21, set tuition fees for academic year 2006/2007 in accordance with its previous commitments to attain a cost recovery ratio of 20 percent of total economic costs on all three campuses, while keeping annual increases at least on par with the inflation rate in Jamaica for students at Mona.

Because of significant increases in projected student enrolment for 2006/2007 at the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados and at the St Augustine Campus in Trinidad the fees at these campuses will remain unchanged since at the existing fee levels, the cost recovery ratio of 20 percent will have been attained; while at the Mona campus in Jamaica, an increase of 8.27% was approved for the tuition fees across all Faculties. This increase is below the annual inflation rate of 12.9% at January 2006 and below the 10% mark, which the Council had previously accepted as the maximum increase to be levied, even if the inflation rate exceeded 10%.

Council also approved the recommendation to consolidate the fees for Pre-Clinical Medicine and Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Medical Sciences into one fee, with effect from August 1, 2006.

The outcome of the above decisions is that students entering the Faculties of the Humanities & Education, the Social Sciences, the Pure & Applied Sciences and the Department of Advanced Nursing in academic year 2006/2007 will pay a flat fee of J$133,341 (compared to J$123,156 last year). Students entering the Faculty of Law will pay J$145,103 (compared with J$134,020 in the previous year), while for the Faculty of Medical Sciences, returning Pre-Clinical students would pay J$226,081 and Clinical students J$430,724. The merged fee of J$325,048 would be applicable to new Medical students entering the Faculty for the first time in 2006/2007.

Council also approved fees for self-financing programmes across the University.
