PRINCIPAL MEETS WITH IRVINE HALL MEMBERS

The Principal of The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and other members of the University Administration met with students at the Irvine Hall of Residence this afternoon, Monday, August 28, 2006 to discuss matters related to the incident which occurred on the Hall on Sunday, August 27, 2006 and which resulted in the wounding of a female student on the Hall.

The University has been informed that the student was attacked by a visitor who was a guest of hers, under circumstances which could not have been avoided by any security measures which the institution has in place.

The UWI deeply regrets the unfortunate incident and wishes to assure members of the community and the wider public that every effort is being made to ensure the safety of the campus community. As a result, and in light of concerns expressed, The UWI is following up with its security providers to deal with any security issues arising from this incident. Counselling sessions with members of the Hal to assist them to cope with the situation were started on Sunday morning, arranged by the Office of the Director of Student Services.

In addition, the Director’s Office has arranged for the student’s mother to travel to Jamaica to be by her side at this difficult time.
