UWI Vice Chancellor Pays Tribute to Angella King

The University of the West Indies wishes to place on record its gratitude to one of our most distinguished Honorary Graduates, Angela King, for the towering contribution which she made in the United Nations as an international Public Servant over four decades.

Her selection in l999 for the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LL.D) at our Graduation Ceremony was based on the excellence which she brought to the many appointments in the United Nations to better the common good. Her work as chair of the agency on Women and Gender Equality, her passion about the necessity for the Advancement of Women, an agency which she had led as Director, her absolute commitment to human resource management at its most fundamental level, and probably the most significant assignment when she was named Chief of Mission of the UN Observer Mission in South Africa, where she was at the centre of negotiations to move South Africa from white minority rule - all these accomplishments are a testament to the high regard in which she was held by the Secretary General of the United Nations. It was therefore no surprise that her final assignment was as special advisor to Kofi Annan – a clear recognition of her special qualities which she had used in the service of the UN for over forty years.

The University of the West Indies is proud of this amazing woman who throughout her life used her intellect and her training to spearhead changes on the world scene. We wish to record our thanks to her family who must have provided the necessary support to enable her to undertake the tremendous challenges which she was handed in the course of her brilliant career. This is an alumna who has made us proud.
