UWI DEPLORES ABDUCTION OF LECTURER
Posted: October 20, 2006
The University of the West Indies deeply deplores the incident in which one of our lecturers Dr. Kingsley Stewart was abducted from the campus. We also regret the security apprehensions this has fuelled in yet another educational institution. While we recognize that the campus is not immune to the general problem of crime in the rest of the society, and that being a public institution with some twelve thousand on-campus students and two thousand staff, there are challenges to securing the campus, we also accept that we have a responsibility to ensure that our community has the best possible security in that context.
The campus has, effective today, adjusted the security measures within Faculties. Foot patrols which previously switched to bike patrols at 7.00 p.m. have now been extended to 10:00 p.m.
In recent months we have been improving security lighting and are instituting a pilot project of surveillance cameras in key locations on campus. We also provide an escort service on request. We look forward to increased security by these and other measures and remind all users of the campus that they too have a part to play in minimizing risks to their person and in reporting any breaches of security.
