Posted: April 05, 2007
The recently held Frank Worrell Commemorative Blood Drive saw 363 UWI students and staff turning out to give a pint of blood each. The University of the West Indies, Mona has made a national record with the highest total from a single institution. The Frank Worrell Commemorative Blood Drive is a collaborative effort involving the University Health Centre, the National Blood Transfusion Bank Service, and a group of final year Social Marketing students from The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC).
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Frank Worrell Commemorative Drive Professor E. Nigel Harris, Vice Chancellor, UWI commended the efforts of the students and organizers in promoting voluntary blood donation.
Dr. Lundie Richards, Director of the National Blood Transfusion Service congratulated the University of the West Indies for their role in leading voluntary blood donation, as this he said “is the direction that the Blood Transfusion Service is heading and I would encourage the whole island to follow suit.”
The University Health Centre hosts three blood drives over one calendar year aimed at promoting voluntary blood donation among the UWI community.
