The University of the West Indies, Mona has noted with profound sadness and heartfelt regret the untimely passing of  four of its students  in the past week:  second year student in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Jemile Fung Chung; Cultural and  Entertainment Affairs Chairperson for the Guild of Students, Andy Lopez, and final year student in the Faculty of Medical Sciences Nursing degree programme, Shekira Wright, all of  whom died under tragic circumstances in a car accident on Monday, October 20, 2008 , as well as second year student in the Faculty of Medical Students Lia Lashley, who passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, October 23, 2008.

The University will hold a memorial service for all four students on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 11.00 a.m. at the University Chapel. A collection will be taken at the service for the Guild of Students’ Needy Students Fund.

The University community commiserates with the families and friends of these students in their time of loss and hopes that they will find the necessary strength to cope in the days ahead.
