UWI Receives Second Place Award for HIV/ AIDS Best Practice Award for Adoption of ILO workplace principles

The University of the West Indies, Mona received the second place “Best Practice Award for HIV/AIDS Adoption of International Labour Organization (ILO) workplace principles” in 2008.  The first place award went to The Sandals Chain and third place to Red Stripe.

The UWI, Mona through the Health Centre initiated a Sexual Safety Initiative in 2007. Phase One of the initiative entailed a Health Behaviour Survey of students and a qualitative study which aimed to investigate the values and practices on campus life which may facilitate HIV transmission and identify the campus cultures relevant to sexual practices. The survey assisted the Health Centre in developing a structured health promotion programme which includes testing, counseling and guidance in HIV/AIDS: of special note is that the University Health Centre is a one of a kind facility in providing HIV testing and counseling services in a primary health care facility. The University also supplies the campus community with condom machines, has disseminated its HIV/AIDS policy and introduced web-based learning as it relates to awareness of HIV/ AIDS policy on campus.

The award recognized the significant advances made in setting standards of good practice in response to the epidemic.
