Service for Professor Charles Denbow February 27th

The University of the West Indies, Mona has learnt with regret of the passing of Consultant Cardiologist and former Head of the Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Professor Charles Denbow on Tuesday, February 10, 2009. The funeral service for Professor Denbow will take place on Friday, February 27, 2009 at the University Chapel, beginning at 2.00 p.m
Charles Denbow first served at the University Hospital of the West Indies as an Intern and later Resident and Senior Resident in Medicine. He joined the staff of the University of the West Indies in 1976, was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Medicine in 1979 and Senior Lecturer in 1986, specialising in the field of Cardiology. He also held appointments in a number of prestigious institutions overseas and served as Visiting Professor in the Section of Cardiology at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia and External Examiner in Internal Medicine at the University of Guyana Medical School.
A distinguished clinical cardiologist of international renown, Professor Denbow focused on cardiovascular diseases that are important in the Caribbean. He made significant and important contributions to knowledge in his field, his publications appearing in regional and highly regarded peer-reviewed international medical journals. Much of his research work centred on patient-focused clinical cardiology, emphasizing therapeutic and diagnostic advances that affect the care of patients with cardiovascular diseases.
Professor Denbow was an active contributor to scientific meetings mainly in the Caribbean region but also in North America, Europe and Asia. He also played a significant role as a clinician/teacher and administrator at the UWI.
In 2008, he was awarded the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer (OD) for his contribution to the field of Medicine and particularly the teaching of Medicine.
The University extends sincere condolences to his children, Kathryn, Charles and Gordon, other members of his family, colleagues and friends in their time of loss.
