Update on Security Issues

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to report that significant progress is being made in the efforts to clear up crimes involving members of the Campus community. In recent weeks, Campus Police, collaborating with the Matilda’s Corner Police, have been able to recover several items of stolen property. The Police have also been able to identify and arrest perpetrators of these crimes, including two men suspected to be responsible for a number of abductions and sexual attacks involving University students at various locations in the Corporate Area.

The Matilda’s Corner Police have arrested two (2) persons on suspicion of having committed several abductions and rapes in the Corporate Area.  Two motor vehicles which reportedly featured in these incidents were also recovered. The names of the suspects have been withheld pending identification parades.

On Tuesday, May 12, 2009, Mr. Caesar Okonkwo o/c Caesar Blake whose fingerprints were found on two (2) separate crime scenes in the Faculty of Pure & Applied Sciences was convicted on both counts in the Half Way Tree Criminal Court. Mr. Okonkwo will be sentenced on the 26th of May, 2009.

Campus Police have succeeded in recovering six stolen laptop computers, two of which have been claimed by UWI students. Two other persons have been arrested in connection with this burgeoning trade in stolen computers.

The University welcomes these developments and urges members of the campus community to give their continued support to Campus Security as efforts continue to address various security concerns.
