As part of the ongoing strategy to reduce criminal activities on The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona Campus, the Police have secured convictions for persons involved in theft on the Campus. This is the culmination of several months of investigation by the Office of the Director of Security and the Mona Police supported by Campus Security.
35 year old Ceasar Okonkwo, a Labourer of 16 Whitfield Avenue, Kingston 13, appeared in the #3 Criminal court where he pleaded guilty to two (2) counts of breaking and five (5) counts of larceny. The charges arose from the theft of several computers from various locations on the Mona Campus. Six (6) computers valued at five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) were recovered. Mr. Okonkwo was sentenced to three (3) years imprisonment at hard labour for the breakings and two (2) years imprisonment for the larceny of the computers.
Three (3) other persons, two (2) of them students of The UWI, Mona Campus are facing similar charges after computers that were reportedly stolen from the Campus were found in their possession.
The University urges members of the campus community to continue taking the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property as well as giving their continued support to the Campus Security Services in this ongoing effort. Particular attention should be paid to the security of cash, cell phones and laptops as these are being targeted by dishonest persons.
