Cheryl Brown Presented at International Bioethics Committee

The Manager at the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR), UWI, Mona and Attorney-at-law, Cheryl Brown was a specially invited guest at the 16th session of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) in Mexico City held on November 22 – 25. The Session was followed by a meeting of the Joint Action for Capacity Building in Bioethics (JACOB). Ms. Brown made a presentation to the IBC on the establishing of a National Bioethics Committee (NBC).
Ms. Brown has been Jamaica’s Representative to the Inter-Governmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC) since 2007. This is the first time any representative from the Anglo-phone Caribbean has been on the Committee. In July of this year, she was made Vice-Chair for the Bureau of the IGBC.
The IGBC is comprised of 36 elected Member States who meet to examine ethical issues involved in research and policy decisions regarding such things as cloning, human rights and social transformation, among others.
Ms. Brown is a founding member of the National Bioethics Committee of Jamaica and member of the Steering Committee for the establishment of an Ethics Centre for the UWI.
