Campus Water Supply Restrictions -Update 2

The severe water restrictions currently being experienced by The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona are likely to continue over the next few months. Against that background, the University is instituting a number of measures to manage the water situation for the immediate future. A call centre has been established to respond to queries about the existing situation. The telephone numbers are 935-8010 or Extension 2010.

Steps are being taken to increase the volume of water trucked around the Campus on a daily basis. Two water trucks will replenish existing storage tanks across the campus on a 16-hour shift.  A delivery schedule is being established to ensure that priority areas such as the Health Centre, halls of residence and the Pathology Department receive an adequate supply of water.  Water will also be delivered around the campus to fill containers.

The Estate Management Department has conducted a survey of areas on campus which already have storage tanks and an assessment is being made to determine where there may be a shortfall. Additional tanks will be acquired once the areas of need are identified.

Under the circumstances, a number of adjustments will have to be made. Given the very low water pressure in most areas, only bathrooms on the ground floor of buildings should be used.  Bathrooms on the upper levels of buildings will be closed until the situation improves. To assist in maintaining an acceptable level of sanitation, containers of water should be provided in the bathrooms that remain open.  Hand sanitizers will also be placed in public restrooms. Some 30 portable toilets have been obtained to alleviate the problem in critical/strategic locations. These have been placed in the faculties, halls of residence, and administrative areas.

Members of staff and students are again reminded of their personal responsibility to conserve water at all times and to increase good hygiene practices through the use of hand sanitizers. The Campus is also urging all members of the community to store water when it becomes available. In addition, staff and students who live off campus are encouraged to bring their own drinking water.

The community will be further updated as necessary.
