Severe Weather Bulletin 2

There is an area of Low Pressure System across the south western Caribbean. The area of Low Pressure is expected to remain nearly stationary at least until Monday with its associated Trough also expected to linger across Jamaica during this period.

The forecast is for it to be Partly cloudy with isolated showers across sections of northern parishes in the morning with outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms across most parishes, lingering into the evening in the afternoon of Friday, October 8, 2010.

Tonight, lingering showers are expected mainly across northern parishes, partly cloudy elsewhere.

The three day forecast is for periods of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday, October 9 & 10, especially during the afternoon, and for outbreaks of showers and isolated thunderstorms on Monday, October 11, 2010.

Based on the rainfall which we have been experiencing since the start of September and more so since Wednesday 29 September and Thursday 7 October, there are going to be challenges. The earth would have become saturated; therefore run-off is going to be greatly increased. Flooding is very likely.

Members of the university community are urged to:

-    Avoid areas which are flooded and those which are likely to become flooded
-    Elevate items such as furniture, books and equipment which are likely to be   affected by flood waters
-    Cover electronic equipment with plastic
-    Position water defences, such as sand bags
-    At the end of the day, ensure that windows and doors are properly closed and suspend power supply to the facility
-    Be alert during rain events and be prepared to take quick action if required

Members are also encouraged to monitor the media for updates on weather conditions.
