Mona Rules the Track at Inter-Campus Games

Once again, it was the team from the Mona campus who ruled the roost when the track and field component of the 19th annual University of the West Indies Inter-Campus Games was held at the National Stadium on Friday, May 20, 2010.

Mona ended the day on 373 points, with Cave Hill campus second on 293.5 points, while St. Augustine brought up the rear with 280.5 points. Ann-Marie Finegan of Mona was the Victrix Ludorum with 28 points, while Cave Hill’s Daniel Burke was the Victor Ludorum with 24 points. Seven records were broken on Friday, with Cave Hill copping four and Mona three.

Cave Hill’s Robert Gooding won the Men’s Long Jump with 15.28m, smashing the old record of 14.67 set in 1987 by Marvin Reid. A distant second was Jelani Bogle of Mona with 13.52m, while team mate Darrell Edwards was third with 13.40m.

Keisha Walkes of Mona obliterated the field in the Women’s Shot Putt to win with 13.11m, breaking the old record of 12.63m set by Camilla Pounder. Alecia Williams, also of Mona, was second with 10.03m, while St. Augustine’s Candace Radgman was third with 9.35m.

The Women’s High Jump record of 1.65m was equalled by Mona’s Misha Kay Dacosta. Cave Hill’s Dania Hamilton and Paula Babb took the next two positions with leaps of 1.60m and 1.50m respectively.

West Indies Women cricketer Shakera Selman showed her diversity by winning the javelin throw in a record breaking 39.31m. The Cave Hill campus athlete broke the record of 38.85m set in 2009 by Kadian Sutherland. Darlene Lewis of St. Augustine was second with 34.67m and third was Alecia Williams of Mona with 28.67m.

The Men’s Shot Putt record also fell by the wayside when Cave Hill’s Benjamin Hood won in 14.19m, breaking the old record of 13.93m set in 2005 by Daley Harris. Second was Ohane Harris of Mona in 13.41m, while Keon Francis of St. Augustine was third in 13.31m.

The two track records that fell both came in the medley relays. Cave Hill took the top spot in the women’s 800 Sprint Medley in 1:49.81 seconds, down from 1:51.32 set in 2009 by Mona. In the Men’s event, Mona won in 3:38.09, breaking the old time of 3:38.35.

Jason Young of Mona did the sprint double, posting impressive results. In the 200m, he won in 20.58 seconds, with team mate David Dunn second in 21.52 and third was St. Augustine’s Stephawn Solomon in 21.80 seconds. Young took the gold in the 100m dash in 10.38 seconds, with Dunn again second in 10.62 seconds, while Darren Nelson of St. Augustine was third in 10.94 seconds.

Mona’s Lesline Gilzene took the women’s 100m and 200m in times of 12.10 seconds and 24.35 seconds respectively.
