The findings of work done towards the creation of a youth mainstreaming strategy are to be unveiled during a two-day workshop at the Faculty of Law, University of the West Indies, Mona from June 29 – 30. The overall aim of the youth mainstreaming strategy is to strengthen their involvement in governance and to invigorate the institutions directly involved in serving Jamaican youth.
The workshop is being organized by the Centre for Leadership and Governance, UWI in collaboration with the National Centre for Youth and Development, under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture. During the workshops, project coordinators will engage stakeholders from public and private sector organizations and civil society on how best to execute different phases of the youth mainstreaming programme.
The first phase is expected to see the streamlining and bolstering of youth development initiatives and programmes in both government and non-government organizations, as well as the development of a Youth Training Plan. The second phase is expected to be a massive promotion of the youth mainstreaming programme across the country.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Olivia Grange will extend remarks at the Opening Ceremony on June 29 at 8:30am on behalf of the Government of Jamaica. Professor Gordon Shirley, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Mona campus will bring greetings from the University community.
The Centre for Leadership and Governance, UWI, Mona has been commissioned since October 2010 to develop the Youth Mainstreaming Strategy for Jamaica, a manual for youth mainstreaming, generic action plans for the public, private and civil society, a social marketing strategy and campaign and a monitoring and evaluation framework.
