Eight Members of the UWI Community Receive National Honours

Eight members of the UWI, Mona community were presented with national honours by His Excellency, the Governor General of Jamaica, the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen at the recently held National Honours and Awards Ceremony at King’s House. Receiving the Order of Jamaica (OJ), the fifth highest honour were Honorary Graduate, Dr. Raymond Chang who was recognized for his outstanding contribution as a business leader and philanthropist in the financial, health, education and cultural sectors, and members of the UWI Mona School of Business (MSB) Board, Peter Moses and Ambassador Douglas Saunders who were recognized for their contribution to public service. They were among the six recipients of this award.
 
UWI Professor Patrick Bryan was conferred with the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD) for excellence in academia, likewise Professors Peter Fletcher and Barrie Hanchard were recognized for their contribution to the practice, teaching and research of Medicine with the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD). They were among twenty-six Jamaican nationals who were recipients of awards in this category.
 
Also receiving the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer (OD) was UWI, Mona Professor Everard Barton, for his outstanding contribution to Medicine (Nephrology) and community service. Mrs. Rodina Reid, Senior Assistant Registrar, in the Secretariat Section in the Office of the Campus Registrar received badge of Honour for Meritorious Service for her dedicated service in the field of Education Administration. A total of one hundred and fifty-three individuals were awarded for their contributed to nation building through education, health, community service and development, public service, sports, philanthropy,  foreign service.
 
National Honours and Awards are presented to recognize individuals who by their service and contribution have had a meaningful and significant impact on national life. Orders are used to recognize merit in terms of achievement and service. Decorations and Awards are used to recognize bravery, meritorious, long and/or valuable service and/or good conduct.
 
The University community congratulates the recipients on this tremendous achievement which acknowledges their years of outstanding and dedicated service, in keeping with the institution’s mission to propel the economic, social, political and cultural development of the society through teaching, research, innovation, community Services and intellectual leadership.
