UWI Mona Completes Successful Pan Am Chess Venture

The UWI, Mona Campus successfully competed at the 2011 Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championships, which took place December 26-31 in Dallas, Texas, placing third in the "Best International team" award category.

The Championship featured the best universities and colleges in the region including several Grand and International Masters. UWI, Mona fell short by only a half point in the final round match against the higher seeded University of Texas, having earlier registered impressive wins over Florida Atlantic University, and Arizona State University, and gained a hard fought draw with Texas Tech University.

Former Under 18 Champion and Faculty of Humanities and Education student, Stuart James made a long awaited return to top form chess to finish on a stunning 4 points out of a possible 6 games, which included three brilliant wins, two draws and one loss. Overall, James tied for third place for the top scorers on board 2 out of all such representatives from 28 different Universities. Other team members, 2011 National Champion of Jamaica Damion Davy, National Junior Champion Miguel Asher and Zachary Ramsay, also scored favorable results.

The venture was made possible by the Office of the Principal in addition to support from the Office of the Vice Chancellor and the Office of the Deputy Bursar. In the upcoming year, the UWI Chess Society hopes to implement new strategies to improve the presence of the game on campus, and to revive its charitable efforts.
