Reflections on the past fifty years since Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago gained independence, and possible directions for the next fifty, will be explored when The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), University of the West Indies, Mona, hosts a five-day conference at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, August 20-24, 2012.
 
The Conference, titled, “50-50: Critical Reflections in a Time of Uncertainty” is the culmination of an approximately two year programme of research spearheaded by SALISES, some aspects of which have previously been shared with the Jamaican populace in a series of seminars hosted throughout 2011, including individual “Public Conversations” with former Jamaican Prime Ministers Most Hon. Edward Seaga, Most Hon. P.J. Patterson and Prime Minister Most Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller.
 
The upcoming five-day Conference, with a broader Caribbean focus, will see presentations by distinguished international and regional political representatives and academics including Hon. Dian Abbott, United Kingdom Member of Parliament; Hon. Dr. Peter Phillips, Minister of Finance, Jamaica ;Prime Minister of St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Hon. Dr. Ralph Gonsalves; Leader of the Opposition of Barbados, Hon. Owen Arthur; Sir. Dwight Venner, Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank; UWI Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne will deliver the Sir Arthur Lewis Distinguished Lecture titled “Whence and Whither Caribbean Health in this Fiftieth Year?”.
 
Conference topics will explore a range of issues including health, education, economic and political systems, culture, race and religion, the natural environment across several islands including Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia.
