The Western Jamaica Campus of the University of the West Indies, Mona, in Montego Bay, Jamaica now has its own newspaper.
 
The new WJC Insider, which is produced by students of the Western Jamaica Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI-WJC), hit the streets with its very first edition this month.
 
The WJC Insider features an array of news, sports, entertainment, opinion and lifestyle features.
 
Director of the UWI-WJC, Dr. Luz Longsworth, is resportedly pleased with the creation of the Campus’ first newspaper.
 
“I congratulate the committee on the introduction of a newspaper for WJC and they can be assured of my full support in this initiative,” Dr. Longsworth stated.
 
She has also expressed confidence in the team’s ability to create a newspaper that is keen on quality and truly representative of the UWI-WJC.
 
The newspaper is produced by Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) students along with support from Digital Media Production (DMP) students – whose programmes fall under CARIMAC.
 
“Well, first off, I’m so excited and proud that a group of students conceptualized and then mobilized to create a newspaper of their very own, so I was more than willing to help in every way without spoon feeding yet allowing them to have a real newspaper and newsroom experience,” Coordinator of the CARIMAC Department at WJC, Steffon Campbell, in an interview with WJC Insider.
 
He added: “I see the WJC Insider becoming not only a staple of the Western Jamaica Campus but also of the West. No limits. I also see it becoming a link among CARIMAC students of each year.”
 
Campbell disclosed that it was his ultimate dream ... to see a full CARIMAC media house with online, radio, television and print options.
 
The newspaper’s leadership committee comprises the second year CARIMAC/IMC students who have formed a club called the WJC Newsroom.
 
President of the WJC Newroom, Olivia Samuels, said, “I am beyond excited about this venture although we are starting from scratch with something as large as this.” She added: “It’s really a good feeling working with this committee. I just believe that this newspaper, which we plan to manage very well, can become a major newspaper in Western Jamaica.”
 
 
The UWI-WJC, which was started in 2008, has approximately 800 students studying various undergraduate and graduate programmes at its Queen’s Drive location in the second city of Montego Bay.
