Western Jamaica Campus to explore ‘Bad Friday’: the Coral Gardens Incident, Fifty Years Forward

(MONTEGO BAY) APRIL 3, 2013 –  AS THE Rastafari Movement continues their commemorative events of the 1963 Coral Gardens incident of holy week, the Western Jamaica Campus of the University of the West Indies and the Rastafari Coral Gardens Committee are collaborating to ensure that the voices of the West are heard by hosting an event entitled “Exploring the Coral Gardens Incident: Fifty Years forward.”
 
The event will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2013, 5pm-9pm at The University of the West Indies, Mona – Western Jamaica Campus. All are invited to this event which is free of charge.
The event will be spearheaded by a panel discussion featuring members of the National Reparations Commission, Political Representatives, Rastafari Coral Gardens Committee and the Legal Fraternity, as well as members of the Rastafari community who were directly impacted by the 1963 incident.
 
There will also be entertaining cultural activities such as performances by the Rasta Village drummers, poetry, music and dance by members of the Rastafarian movement and students of the University of the West Indies, Mona – Western Jamaica Campus, as well as a screening of the documentary ‘Bad Friday’ which chronicles the history of violence against Rastafari through the eyes of the Coral Gardens Rastafari community.
