CB Group/UWI 5K ready set for Nov.17

On Sunday November 17, 2013 at 7am sharp, thousands will be off to fast start at the UWI Mona Bowl for the second staging of the CB Group/ UWI 5K Run/Walk.

This year’s staging will include new features such as electronic timing bibs and a new route with 75% of the course being on the scenic UWI Mona Campus. The Race will start and end at the UWI Mona Bowl. The Honoree this year will be The Honorable Michael ‘Mike’ Fennel, OJ., for his dedicated service to the Jamaica Olympic Association as President for 36 years. His award will be presented during the post-race awards ceremony.

The 2012 CB Group/UWI 5K Run/Walk event was very successful in its inaugural staging, attracting approximately 2,800 participants. The event also raised JM$18 million dollars.  which,  according to race director , Alfred ‘Franno’ Francis of Running Events Jamaica,  was   the most money ever raised by an inaugural 5k event in Jamaica”. Corporate sponsorships, individual donations as well as entry fees accounted for the sum raised – with individual donations contributing to the majority share in proceeds gained.

The 5K event dubbed “Walk Good, Run Great for Education and Sports Development” allowed 20 outstanding first and second year students to fund their tertiary education as recipients of sports or academic scholarships for the academic year 2013-2014., The UWI Mona Bowl for Sporting Excellence will also be fitted with well needed lighting fixtures, which will facilitate later training of athletes, competitions and events at the UWI/Usain Bolt Track; all due to the very successful CB Group UWI 5k event in 2012.

Back on board to show their commitment to Education and Sports development in Jamaica are CB Group; delivering another 3 million dollars as the title sponsor; Scotia Bank and The National Baking Company, both contributing 1 million dollars each as this year’s platinum sponsors; Island Grill and Dunlop Corbin Communications as bronze sponsors.

According to  newly appointed Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor of The UWI Mona Campus, Professor Archibald McDonald “We are looking forward to hosting an even larger event this year, surpassing the 18 million we achieved last year, however, we can only do this with  the help of our very own staff and students, UWI Alumni worldwide, corporate sponsors, individual donors, Jamaicans who believe in our strong sports brand, the diaspora, and anyone else out there who would like to make their contribution to a worthy cause”.

Registration is now open at The UWI Mona Sports Office (Opposite Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre). Online registrations will open on October 17 on the Running Events website: www.runningeventsja.com
