UWI and University of London partner on Global Change Conference

The Department of Geography & Geology, the University of the West Indies, in conjunction with Department of Geography, Royal Holloway, University of London, the Climate Change Research Group and the Developing Areas Research Group of the Royal Geographical Society/Institute of British Geographers are holding a joint Regional Conference on ‘The Caribbean Region: Adaptation and Resilience to Global Change’ at the Mona Campus, June 23rd -27th.

This is the 6th meeting in the British-Caribbean Geography Seminar Series which, for two decades, has brought researchers periodically together to highlight geographical and related research on Caribbean economic and environmental change. These meetings aim to provide a forum for geographers and researchers in the natural and social sciences to present and discuss their work on the impacts of double exposure to global change on Caribbean people, societies and landscape, modes of coping and adaptation, and strategies for building resilience.

Global change encompasses interconnected environmental, economic, social and political factors that create vulnerabilities and invoke local responses. Impacts are often negative, though positive responses to new economic opportunities are not precluded.Vulnerabilities range in scale from regional and national economies, through terrestrial and marine ecosystems, to communities, households and other social groups. The meeting will feature more than 40 presentations based on research on Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, St Vincent, St Kitts, St Lucia, Dominica, Haiti and Martinique. The principal investigators are affiliated with institutions across the Caribbean, the UK, the USA, Canada, Colombia and Germany. An important feature will be presentations from postgraduate students from the UWI campuses, and universities in the USA, Canada and the UK.
