UWI initiates fogging to prevent mosquito borne diseases

The Estate Management Department has announced that there will be a fogging exercise to reduce the mosquito population on campus in the wake of the outbreak of mosquito borne diseases in the Eastern Caribbean.
Statement from the Estate Management Department
"There is an outbreak of Mosquito-borne chikungunya fever in the Eastern Caribbean, and Jamaica is currently experiencing an increase in mosquito Infestation Island wide. Chikungunya fever and dengue fever are viral infections that are transmitted from person to person mainly by, the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
As part of the University’s plan to protect the campus community from Dengue, the Estate Management Department will be carrying out campus wide fogging for mosquitoes. This will commence on Saturday, June 14th, 2014 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
The areas that will be affected are as follow:
- West Road
- Mary Seacole Hall
- Post-Grad Housing
- Aqueduct Way
- Gibraltar Camp Way
- Student Union
- Ring Road
- Gibraltar Hall Road
- St. John’s Close
- Taylor Hall
- Castries Drive
- College Common
- Irvine Hall
- Rex Hall
- Long Mountain Road
- Chancellor Hall
- Preston Hall
- Long Mountain Close
- College Close
- University Close
We are recommending that:
- Persons stay indoors during the spraying operation.
- If you are in a car in an area that is being sprayed remain inside, turn on the AC and restrict it to the indoor air circulation.
- If you suffer from any respiratory illness it is best to leave the area before the spraying operation starts and return only after it is over.
