MOU Signed Between The UWI Mona and Ganja Growers and Producers Association

The University of the West Indies, Mona, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ganja Growers and Producers Association.  The MOU was signed on Friday, April 24, 2015, by Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of The UWI, Mona Campus, Professor Archibald McDonald and Mr. Richard Crawford, Vice Chairman, Ganja Growers and Producers Association.

This framework agreement will facilitate sharing by way of general information, the research findings and work which The UWI will be leading in the development of the cannabis industry in Jamaica and in turn, the cooperatives will grow, reap, store, and supply the cannabis sativa plants and industrial hemp to The UWI under conditions specified by The UWI for its research, medicinal use and development and any other purposes related to medicinal research.

Under the Agreement subject to availability, The UWI may allocate or share greenhouse expertise and or facilities with the communities to improve their productive processes in growing hemp and other forms of cannabis.

In welcoming the development, Professor McDonald thanked the Ganja Growers and Producers for agreeing to sign this MOU which he said signalled The UWI’s commitment to ensure that the benefits get to the small farmers and encouraged them to continue their advocacy.

Richard (Dickie) Crawford in his remarks said that history was being made again with the signing of the MOU and that he was proud of the role played by Professor McDonald, “…the Head of this prestigious institution", in bringing about this collaboration.
Paul Burke, Programme Director, National Legalization Campaign, also emphasized the important role that The UWI had played when the Ganja Future Growers and Producers Association was launched. He said that the word ‘Future’ had now been dropped from the title of the Association.

Also signing the MOU were Dr. Camille Bell-Hutchinson, Campus Registrar, The UWI, Mona; Orville Slivera, Chairman, Ganja Growers and Producers Association and Maxine Stowe Ganja Growers and Producers Association.
