International Council on Education for Teaching (ICET) 60th World Assembly to be Held In Kingston

The School of Education, (SOE), University of the West Indies, Mona, in partnership with the Teachers Colleges of Jamaica (TCJ) will be hosting the International Council on Education for Teaching (ICET) 60th World Assembly from July 18 to 21, 2016 in Kingston, Jamaica. ICET is an international association of policy and decision-makers in education, government and business, dedicated to improving educational experiences and outcomes in all parts of the world. Founded in 1953, ICET’s focus has continually emphasized international cooperation to improve the quality of teacher education. Since 1953, ICET has convened seven World Assemblies in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region. This will be the third time Jamaica has hosted the assembly since 1971.

A primary objective for hosting the World Assembly this year is to engender a cross-disciplinary focus on developing teacher capacity through quality teacher education in the Caribbean region. Thus the conference will enjoy participation from various Caribbean research communities including ESD, TVET, STEM, Quality Assurance, Inclusive Education and Teacher Education. We will be welcoming Chief Education Officers from five Caribbean territories, and teacher educators from across the region.

Caribbean delegates will network with each other and over 100 delegates from all over the world. This provides spaces to explore and discuss cross - border and interdisciplinary research partnerships.

A signature objective of ICET 2016 is to build on the partnership between the SOE and the TCJ to motivate and support faculty of the teachers’ colleges to deliver research papers at the conference. We are pleased that thirty papers will be presented by TCJ colleagues including two by student teachers.

The conference will also provide opportunities for stakeholders to hear from and dialogue with policy makers responsible for policies guiding/framing teacher education in the Caribbean.
