MSBM 2nd Business and Management Conference to focus on the private sector and sustainable development strategies

 Mona School of Business and Management will be hosting its second business and management conference under the theme - ‘Connecting The Dots: Enterprise, Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development on November 9-11, 2016 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The main speakers at this year’s event are Dr. John Sviokla, Principal and U.S advisory innovation leader- Pricewaterhousecoopers,  Mr Paul B. Scott, President of the PSOJ, and Neil  McFarlane, Chief for the New York Liaison Office for United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, UNISDR.

 One of the major highlights of discussions will be the recently launched Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development or the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) which recognizes the central role of the private sector in meeting the objective of international development. 

 Discussions will involve key sectors and groups including academia and the public and private sectors. It will focus on the private sector and by extension entrepreneurship, enterprise and sustainable development; innovation and competitiveness; factors influencing SME performance and strategies and perspectives to help Caribbean businesses going global – all areas the private sector can contribute to in achieving the 17 SDG goals set by the UN for 2030.

 The conference will specifically focus on practical and theoretical contributions, academic papers and works in progress from top researchers representing twelve countries.  Their contribution will focus on both a global context and from the viewpoint of the Caribbean and developing regions.

Country Manager for the IDB, which is a major sponsor, Therese Turner-Jones said the entrepreneurship and sustainable development is the core of the IDB’s vision for the region.

 Meanwhile, Acting Executive Director for MSBM, Michael Williams said the basis of the conference is to bring together key stakeholders to form partnerships that will help the region to achieve its SDGs. 

"If we are to have sustainable development in the Caribbean region, Governments and the University of the West Indies must work together to provide a framework for encouraging, nurturing and improving the success rate of our entrepreneurs in the region. This conference is the first step in connecting the dots of enterprise, entrepreneurship and sustainable development and laying the foundation for the future partnership with regional Governments."

 The opening ceremony which begins at 6PM on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 is being held in collaboration with the United States Embassy in Kingston and is free to the public.   Additionally, a global entrepreneurship monitor (GEM) workshop will be held on the same day at 1 PM, which will also be free. The full conference fee is U$ 300 while one day attendance attracts a U$ 100 charge. Students with a valid ID will pay U$ 80 for one day and U$240 for the full conference while groups and prof assistants pay U$200.
