UWI/JBDC Partner to Open Business Advisory Service Centre

The University of the West Indies, Mona has partnered with the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) to open the JBDC/UWI Business Centre on the Mona Campus. The official opening took place at the Old Personnel Building, 4 Gibraltar Camp Way on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 4.00 p.m.
UWI, Mona to Seek Accreditation from University Council of Jamaica

The University of the West Indies, Mona has begun processes for accreditation, whereby programmes are recognized as satisfying standards set by the relevant accrediting body and the public may be assured of the quality of the institution.
This follows the general trend of universities operating in the English-speaking Caribbean using accreditation as a cachet in an increasingly competitive environment, and given the desirability of strengthening the quality assurance mechanisms that the UWI has developed over the years.
The Medical and Engineering programmes led the way in securing accreditation from their professional accreditation bodies and this will continue.
Confucius Institute at UWI, Mona Receives Three Thousand Books from Hanban

The Confucius Institute at UWI, Mona, the first of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean is the recipient of approximately three thousand books and two hundred DVDs. These were donated by Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) in Beijing through the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica. The books were presented by H.E. Chen Jinghua, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to UWI, Mona at a Handing Over Ceremony at the Confucius Institute on January 18, 2011. The collection includes teaching materials, literature and course material for Philosophy and Social Sciences in Chinese only, English only and in both languages.
High School Students Have Fun With Physics at UWI, Mona

Dr. Michael Ponnambalam, Lecturer in the Department of Physics at UWI, Mona advocates that, “if we focus first on the students having fun, then they will learn the principles of Physics without even noticing”. This is the philosophy on which the Fifth Form Physics Field Trip, organized by the Department of Physics, is built. He added, “the aim of the Physics Field Trip is to give the students an opportunity to enjoy Physics and thus discover for themselves that Physics is fun.” Approximately five hundred (500) students from twenty-two (22) schools island wide participated in the four day Field Trip which consisted of two hour sessions running from January 18-21, 2011 at UWI, Mona.
UWI, Mona Main Library To Implement New Security System

The UWI Mona Main Library will officially commission into use the new state-of-the-art 3M Library Security System on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 10 am at a launch ceremony to be held at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona. The system was acquired under a Memorandum of Understanding between 3M InterAmerica Inc. (Jamaica Division); the UWI Development and Endowment Fund (UWIDEF); and the UWI, Mona Campus.
Fifth Form Physics Field Trip

The Department of Physics at UWI, Mona as part of its outreach efforts will stage the second annual Fifth Form Field Trip from January 18 – 21, 2011. The Department will host two-hour seminars starting at 9:30 am and 12:30 pm daily teaching select topics on the Caribbean Examination Council and Caribbean Secondary Examinations Physics syllabi through interactive demonstrations, computer simulation and experiments. The Field Trip is aimed at giving fifth form Physics students an opportunity to discover and experience Physics using a fun-filled approach.

UWI Open Scholarship Applications

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is inviting applications for the prestigious UWI 2011 Open Scholarships. All applications must be submitted online at www.uwi.edu/openscholarship2011 by Monday, January 31, 2011.
Each year the University awards scholarships to top performing students across the region to pursue undergraduate degrees at the regional institution. The UWI Open Scholarships will cover tuition, residence costs, both on and off campus, and contributions to books and meals. Eligible applicants are prospective or current first year UWI students from a UWI contributing country with high academic achievements.
Forty-one students from across the region were awarded the UWI Open Scholarships valued at US$ 1.1 million for the 2010/11 academic year.
UWI, Mona Tops Public Speaking Competition at World Universities Debating Championships

The University of the West Indies (Mona) student Krystal Tomlinson copped the top prize in the Public Speaking Competition of the World Universities Debating Championships held recently in Botswana. She was one of four UWI, Mona students who went to the represent the institution. The other members of the team are: Ricardo Brooks, Jarred Brewster and Tashna Edwards.
UWI, Mona Football Scholarship Festival Attracts More Scouts

The University of the West Indies, Mona stages the second UWI, Mona Football Scholarship Festival on January 5-7, 2011 at the Mona Bowl. This year’s Festival will see an increased number of scouting coaches attending the event to recruit athletes. Approximately twelve local and overseas universities will be present at the Football Scholarship Festival.
Participants in the Festival include sixth form student athletes from several high schools from across Jamaica in the Manning and Dacosta Cup Competitions. The event is designed to allow talented and academically eligible young athletes to be recruited by local and overseas coaches and provide an opportunity for the students to receive a scholarship through participation in the Festival.
