Dr. Disraeli M. Hutton Promoted to Rank of Professor

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Disraeli M. Hutton, Senior Lecturer in the School of Education (SOE), Faculty of Humanities and Education, to the rank of Professor.
 
Dr. Disraeli M. Hutton joined the staff of the Department of Educational Studies (now integrated into the new School of Education), University of the West Indies (The UWI) in 2006.  He brought with him a wealth of experience in teaching and administration which served him well in the stellar career he has pursued since becoming a member of the UWI staff, for some twelve (12) years.  Dr. Hutton holds a Bachelor of Science in Technology Education from Buffalo State College, New York; a Master of Education in Career and Technology Education from Bowling Green State University, Ohio; and a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education Administration and Supervision, also from Bowling Green State University, Ohio.  In 2014, Dr. Hutton was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer given the magnitude of his exemplary scholarly research and publication at that time.
 
Dr. Hutton has a distinguished record of scholarly research and publications in areas that are relevant to the education system of Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean.  His primary areas of research and publication include Educational Leadership and the Principalship, Educational Management, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and Educational Finance. He is well known in the regional and international academic community for his scholarship in these areas.  Among his refereed research publications, Dr. Hutton has, to his credit, eight (8) book chapters covering the areas of Educational Leadership and Financing Education.  In addition, he has twenty-seven (27) published journal articles in the areas of Education Leadership, Financing Education and Technical Vocational Education and Training.  He has also published an edited book in collaboration with his colleague on Effective and Successful School Leadership in Jamaica and has made thirty-one (31) scholarly conference presentations locally, regionally and internationally.
 
The frequency with which Dr. Hutton is invited as speaker to address issues of educational leadership, educational management, technical and vocational education and training as well as financing education, attest to a wide recognition of his expertise in these fields.  He has made no less than twenty-one (21) special presentations and invited lectures, primarily, though not exclusively, in Jamaica and other Caribbean countries in which much of his research is grounded.  He has conducted a number of workshops and training sessions in his field of expertise in Jamaica and other Caribbean countries, and has a long list of consultancy services –eighteen (18) in total- through which he has assisted governments and institutions in the region in shaping educational and training plans and policies.
 
Dr Hutton has spearheaded the development of a number of higher education degree programmes at The UWI Mona Campus, including the Master of Arts in Educational Planning and Policy programme and the Master of Arts in Higher Educational Management, both of which were approved and are currently being offered. He has also been instrumental in the development of the Master of Arts in Leadership in TVET and Workforce Development programme, as well as the Post-Graduate Diploma in Educational Administration. Dr. Hutton’s work in higher education goes across faculties, having played an integral role in the development of the Master of Science in Human Resource Development programme in the Faculty of Social Sciences.  
 
Outside of the University he was a member of the team which developed the pre-service programme for the training of principals for the National College for Educational Leadership (NCEL).   Dr. Hutton currently manages the delivery of this NCEL programme on behalf of the School of Education.   In addition, he is currently leading the revision of the seminal Masters of Education in Educational Administration programme which will have an option for Educational Leadership and Management, targeting principals and other senior leaders within the school system. For the above-mentioned programmes, Dr Hutton provided leadership in developing a number of courses or modules.
 
Dr. Hutton’s expertise is extensively sought for the supervision of graduate research.  Since joining the staff of the School of Education in 2006, Dr. Hutton has supervised over fifty (50) research projects to completion.  He has also supervised two (2) doctoral dissertations to completion and has served as Co-supervisor and Internal Examiner for four (4) PhD dissertations in his area of expertise. Dr. Hutton has been lecturing at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in areas of Educational Leadership and Administration, School and Classroom Management, Workforce and Occupational Analysis, and Educational Supervision in the School of Education while maintaining his teaching load in the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work as an adjunct staff.  
 
Dr Hutton has served on various national boards including the Instructional Technology Institute (ITI) which represented a collaboration of the Jamaica Computer Society Foundation (JCSF), Joint Board of Teacher Education (JBTE) and HEART Trust/NTA; National Council on Technical Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET), University Council of Jamaica (UCJ); Holy Trinity High School; Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica (CCCJ) and the National Council on Education (NCE). Dr. Disraeli Hutton’s overall contribution to local schools and regional educational systems for over forty (40) years is undeniably outstanding.
