The UWI Mona Welcomes New Campus Registrar

The University of the West Indies’ (The UWI’s) Office of Administration at its regional headquarters recently announced new senior appointments across the University. The UWI Mona is pleased to announce the appointment of our new Campus Registrar, Dr Donovan Stanberry.

Within The University system, the Campus Registrar is the most Senior Administrator on the Campus, serving as Chief Administrative Officer, Chief Operating Officer and as Secretary to all campus committees. At Mona, the Registrar’s Office has oversight for Admissions; Campus Records Management; Examinations; Human Resource Management; International Students Office; Marketing, Recruitment and Communications; Office of Graduate Studies and Research; Registry Information Systems; and the Secretariat.

About Dr Donovan Stanberry

Dr Stanberry began his professional career in September 1992 as a Lecturer of Mathematics at the College of Arts, Science and Technology, having graduated, with honours, from the Moscow Agricultural Academy (now Russian State Agrarian University), with a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics, in June 1992.

Two years later, he moved on to the Planning Institute of Jamaica, assuming the position of Senior Economist/Head of the Agricultural Unit, until March 1996 when he was recruited to the then Ministry of Public Utilities and Transport, as Senior Director with responsibility for water. In January 1998, transferred to the Ministry of Water, as Senior Director, and was subsequently promoted to Chief Technical Director for water in 2000 in the Ministry of Water and Housing.

In November 2004, he was appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Land and Environment, he was transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands (April 2006) as Permanent Secretary. When the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries was merged with the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce in March 2016, Dr. Stanberry remained Permanent Secretary of the merged Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, until April 2019.

During his long career in the civil service, Dr Stanberry represented the Government of Jamaica at many international forums in the areas of water policy and management, environment, agriculture, MSME development, industry and commerce. He has played a major and sometimes pioneering role in the formulation of policies and legislation in the subject areas under his various ministries’ portfolio. He has also negotiated numerous loans and grants with international development partners for a plethora of projects and programmes in the various ministries he has served, and overseen the successful implementation of said projects and programmes. He has also served on a number of public sector boards throughout his career.

Notwithstanding his hectic workload as a senior civil servant, Dr. Stanberry was able to complete a MBA from the Mona School of Business and Management, with distinction, in 2002, and a doctorate in Environmental Management from UWI, Mona in 2018. He is also a certified teacher of Russian Language.

In recognition of his outstanding public service, Dr Stanberry, also a Justice of the Peace, was conferred with the Order of Distinction (Commander Class) in 2018, by the Government of Jamaica. He is an Elder in the Church of God 7th Day.
